Lord Vishnu goes into sleep for 4 months coming from Devshayani Ekadashi. After this, Lord Vishnu wakes up on the Ekadashi date of Shukla of Kartik month. This 4 month sleep period of Lord Vishnu is called Chaturmas. In such a situation, any auspicious work like marriage, mundal, janeu etc. is not done during this period. Lord Vishnu gets so tired of handling this turmoil that he goes into sleep for 4 months. During this, Lord Vishnu entrusts all the work of handling the world to his different incarnations.
Lord Vishnu remains in sleep from the Ekadashi of Ashadha month to the Ekadashi of Kartik month. During these four months the fertility of the earth decreases. For as many days as Lord Vishnu remains in sleep, his avatar prepares Sanjeevani herb in the ocean. So that the earth can be made fertile again.

The Ekadashi date (devshayani ekadashi 2022 date) of Shukla Paksha of the month of Ashadha will last from 4:40 pm on Saturday, July 9 to 2.14 pm on the next day i.e. Sunday, July 10. Due to Udaya Tithi, the fast of Devshayani Ekadashi will be kept on 10th July only.

Ekadashi Puja – Method-
- Get up early in the morning and retire from bath etc.
- Light a lamp in the temple of the house.
- Anoint Lord Vishnu with Ganga water.
- Offer flowers and Tulsi Dal to Lord Vishnu.
- If possible, keep a fast on this day also.
- Worship God.
- Offer food to God. Keep in mind that only sattvik things are offered to God. Tulsi must be included in the Bhog of Lord Vishnu. It is believed that without Tulsi, Lord Vishnu does not accept the bhog.
- Along with Lord Vishnu, worship Goddess Lakshmi on this holy day.
- On this day, meditate more and more on God.
Why are not any auspicious work done during this time
The rainy season starts from the month of Ashadh. During this time people have to face rain and floods. In such a situation, it becomes very difficult to perform Manglik work. Due to the rainy season, the risk of diseases increases significantly during this time. People’s ability to fight diseases is greatly reduced. It is believed that during these four months, the effect of negative forces increases greatly and positive forces start weakening. Because of which no auspicious work is done.

On this day Lord Vishnu is bathed with Panchamrit to make Lord Vishnu sleep. After this worship with incense and lamp. Prepare a bed for Lord Vishnu to sleep. Make Lord Vishnu sleep by bringing yellow colored cloth for sleeping. Vrats and festivals like Sawan, Shardiya Navratri, Karva Chauth, Deepawali and Chhath Puja fall during the sleeping time of Lord Vishnu.
